Closing The GAP!

Did you realize that more than 50% of Cancer Victims do not receive access to support services?

Hannah’s Klozét Cancer Foundation (Hannah’s Klozét) is working diligently to serve as the ‘closet’ offering practical non-clinical environmental and emotional support, supportive amenities, holistic coaching, and educational services for those living with cancer.

Hannah’s Klozét is a 501c3 non-profit organization formed out of an unmet need experienced by its founder, a cancer survivor, and shared by many battling or living with cancer.

Through the personal experiences of the Hannah’s Klozét founder and the interactions she had with other cancer patients and their families, GAPS were identified in needed non-medical support services.  HK’s goal is to CLOSE THE GAP serving as the 'Closet' and 'Navigator' in connecting those in need to available resources.

Medical science continues making great strides towards giving those who have developed cancer an extended life with excellent quality.  Psychiatrists and psychologists offer the medically based therapeutic tools for mentally coping with the ramifications of cancer.  Many Oncology Centers provide patient advocates for coordinated assistance navigating through the medical process of treatments, doctor visits, and clinical services. Clinical services associated with the medical community give myriads of written information and classes on the “dos and don’ts” to remain ‘healthy’ while living with cancer.

All the medical elements fundamental to a good quality life during cancer recovery and living with cancer are in place, but how does the individual with cancer process, implement and incorporate all the information and medical care into their new routine for life.

The Medical Element

How do we prepare or purchase meals that are necessary for our survival while being amenable to the family?  Whom do we call upon when unable to drive and unable to find a responsible or economically viable transportation alternative for medical appointments?  As a woman with cancer, who in the community is available to provide those commonplace aesthetic amenities such as nail care, skin care treatments, spa services, and make-up now that service delivery must be modified because of our situation?  What hair care services are available to us as our hair experiences the effects of chemotherapy?  Whose understanding, guidance and assistance do we seek if we have no hair at all?   As a woman with breast cancer, who is available with understanding and compassion to assist in our search for undergarments as we try to regain a sense of femininity and confidence in spite of the forced alterations to our breasts?

Sprouting from the unfortunate lack of a readily available single and comprehensive source for information and services guidance to address these non-medical special needs of cancer patients, especially women with cancer, the Hannah’s Klozét Foundation was born.  Hannah’s Klozét’s fundamental aim is functioning as a liaison in developing and nurturing a community network providing cancer patients, especially women with cancer, with information and with awareness and access to readily available resources for those non-clinical but extremely important needs incorporated in daily living with cancer.

Day to Day Living Element

Hannah’s Klozét (HK) continues to actively address several of the many elements identified as non-clinical services that are important in renewing and maintaining a good quality life for those in cancer recovery and living with cancer.

Partnering with several car services suppliers, HK Foundation assists patients unable to have their transportation needs to and from cancer treatment regimens fulfilled by their personal networks and whose transportation expenses  pose a financial hardship.  HK is the intermediary in this process by clearing physicians’ offices and clinics providing cancer treatment services to identify the patient need based on their knowledge of the  specific  patient situation.

Supporting self-confidence restoration necessary for post-surgery women with breast cancer, HK works with certified mastectomy bra providers and medical professionals to assist in securing bras for patients economically unable to purchase their undergarments.

HK serves as an advocate, facilitating cancer patient referrals with critical/emergency basic living dilemmas, by pairing the  patient with entities that assist with housing, food, utilities, emergency repair services for their homes or electronic communications needs. Based on identified economic hardships associated with these dilemmas,  HK can and will financially contribute to meeting the critical need.

In addition to continuing our existing fundamental supportive services efforts, goals set by Hanah's Klozét for the years 2019 thru 2021 include:

  1. Implementation of in-home hair care services to cancer patients provided by a certified trichologist including quality, customized and comfortable hair replacement (wigs).

  2.  Development and implementation of an outreach and engagement program focusing on cancer awareness information and education, cancer screening and genetic testing in rural communities.  The program will be implemented and managed jointly by HK Foundation and its community based medical partnerships.

  3.  Actively advocating for improved statewide legislation that –

  • Enhances covered cancer preventive services to include BRCA screening and counseling available during well-woman visits.

  • Coverage, of dermatological services necessary in treating the residual effects of cancer and associated surgeries as part of long-term cancer treatment.

Hannah's Klozet's Objectives & Goals

Transportation Needs:

Assist those patients actively undergoing treatment regimens and having transportation needs unable to be fulfilled by a patient’s personal network, Hannah’s Klozét is partnering with car services suppliers such as Uber/Lyft in delivering transportation vouchers. Additionally, Hannah’s Klozét will offer prepaid gas cards to help defray the economic cost of transportation that often presents a hardship to patients.   Hannah’s Klozét will serve as the intermediary in this process by allowing physicians’ offices and clinics providing treatment services to identify the need and fulfill the patient’s transportation necessities based on their knowledge of the particular patient situation.

Bringing Better Bras Home To You:

One of our main causes here at Hannah's Klozét is purchasing bras for cancer patients and survivors, an issue that touches many lives, particularly those in the greater New Orleans area. We spend a significant portion of our resources on tackling this problem. See how you can help by reading more or contacting one of our representatives.
